Preserving Our School’s Property (PSP) Program

Beneficiaries: 1,080 students, 48 teachers, 16 counselors, 16 principals and 160 parents

Objective: as part of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation’s efforts in Jordan’s education reform, ASK provided a comprehensive capacity building program for 16 schools with poor infrastructure across the country. The project aimed to empower and enable students, school leaders, and school community members with positive attitude, needed skills, and knowledge to enhance their sense of ownership and commitment towards their schools’ physical environments, and develop their contribution to the schools’ continuous improvement and preservation.

Description: the Preserving Our School’s Property Program was part of a larger effort by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and the Ministry of Education, where 16 schools were renovated and rehabilitated to improve their infrastructure, and the overall learning environments of the schools. The program consisted of hands-on interactive workshops and on-site support aimed at enabling students, teachers, counselors, principals, and parents to better utilize and preserve the newly renovated and rehabilitated schools. In addition, the program aimed to raise students’ sense of belonging and responsibility towards their school environment through different activities, including theatrical teams and extra-curricular voluntary school initiatives.

ASK’s Role: ASK’s team of Instructional Designers, Expert Trainers/Coaches, and Monitoring and Evaluation Specialists played a significant role in the success of the program. ASK’s team of Instructional Designers designed and tailored the program for the various target groups in the 16 schools. ASK further ensured that its capacity building program was customized according to the needs of the clients, and the beneficiaries’ existing culture and needs to ensure achieving program goals effectively. Moreover, ASK’s team of Monitoring and Evaluation Specialists ensured that the impact of the program was measured and analyzed using different performance measures, and pre-, post- and ongoing assessments of the program. Finally,  ASK’s certified and highly qualified Expert Trainers/Coaches conducted the professional development workshops and on-site support activities through a ‘behavior change’ approach, which focused on enhancing beneficiaries’ attitudes towards their schools.

Project Components:

  1. Professional Development Workshops

ASK’s school-based professional development workshops firstly focused on changing the attitudes, behaviors and perspectives of school community members towards their schools. The workshops aimed to engage and improve students’ sense of belonging and responsibility towards their schools, supported by enhancing leadership teams’ and teachers’ competencies according to high global quality teaching standards, to ensure a high quality learning environment for all students (including students with disabilities), while considering the diversity in their abilities. The workshops ultimately aimed to actively engage all students in their schools through various extracurricular activities and techniques in order to maintain, preserve and improve the overall learning environment. The workshops seeked to create a positive school culture, promote pro-social values and behaviors, encourage students’ participation (based on abilities and interest), and actively engage parents and the local communities in school life to reinforce positive learning behaviors, and improve the overall school learning environment.

ASK was diligently and successfully conducting the workshops for educators and counselors to enable them to actively and effectively carry out their roles, adding value to the learning environment and the student’s academic, emotional, physical and social wellbeing and achievement. These workshops covered various topics, including effective classroom management techniques, differentiation, modern pedagogy techniques, effective lesson planning, and leadership and communication skills.

  1. Onsite Support: Mentoring and Coaching

ASK’s unique coaching interface allowed for a focused distribution of Expert Trainers/Coaches in the 16 schools to emphasize the modeling of positive behaviors. Furthermore, it enabled the Expert Trainers/Coaches to tailor solutions according to each school’s profile. The Expert Trainers/Coaches applied a systematic, yet flexible, approach to the on-site support, working closely with the school leadership teams and educators through one-to-one, group coaching, mentoring sessions and continuous follow-up. The Expert Trainers/Coaches’ active presence in the schools was essential to the program, as they induced and ignited the necessary positive change, provided ongoing guidance, facilitation and support, liaised between all school community members, coached and mentored them in order to better preserving and utilizing the available facilities and resources in the schools. This on-site support focused on ensuring that the newly adopted attitudes, skills and knowledge were translated into real practices and behaviors.

  1. Monitoring and Evaluation

Monitoring and Evaluation services were implemented in the 16 schools to ensure effective implementation of the program, and to adjust it if necessary, based on the feedback of the Expert Trainers/Coaches and the beneficiaries. In addition, a monitoring system was set up to ensure sustainability beyond the lifespan of ASK’s intervention
