EEDAD Project: Building the Capacity of ADEC’s New Teachers

Objective: to provide a comprehensive capacity building program comprising two major components for new and experienced teachers for ADEC. The first component – the “Induction Program” – aimed to enhance the readiness of potential new teachers by developing and enhancing their educational pedagogies and competencies within ADEC’s New School Model. The program aimed to offer potential new teachers a systematic structure of support by enabling them with vital information, attitudes, techniques and strategies on topics that are critical to them during their first years of teaching. The second component – the “Coaching & Mentoring Capacity Building Program” – aimed to enable more experienced teachers with the necessary competencies, strategies and tools to support, guide, and mentor new teachers by enhancing the latter’s skills and confidence to succeed in the teaching profession.

Description: The EEDAD project was one of ADEC’s training programs established in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Tawteen Council, striving to train and mentor potential educators to work with ADEC. The project aimed to increase the number of national teachers working in ADEC schools, and to introduce new instructional criteria for ADEC’s New School Model. Furthermore, the program aimed to support graduates seeking employment in the educational field and providing them with the necessary expertise. After completing the “Induction Program”, new teachers would undertake an internship in one of ADEC’s schools.

 

ASK’s Role: ASK’s Instructional Designers designed and developed the “Induction Program” and the “Coaching & Mentoring Capacity Building Program”. The content of both components were customized to meet beneficiaries’ needs, while being benchmarked to international best practices and standards. These were then implemented by ASK’s highly qualified Expert Trainers/Coaches, who aimed to enable and enhance the capacity of potential new teachers to effectively employ modern teaching pedagogies, utilize available resources, and engage with students, parents and other teachers. Both components offered practical and authentic learning opportunities for both potential new teachers and expert teachers, enabling them to intrinsically adopt new attitudes, skills and knowledge, and translate these into new behaviors and practices that can positively contribute to their future roles as teachers and mentors. The two program components focused on building the foundation for a strong and beneficial mentoring relationship between the potential new teachers and expert teachers, through collaboration and continuous learning for the ultimate purpose of providing meaningful learning opportunities for students within ADEC’s New School Model.

 

Project Components:

 

  1. Professional Development Workshops

Both components were implemented through interactive and hands-on professional development workshops. For the first component, participants’ competencies were developed in reference to ADEC’s Teacher’s Professional Standards. The workshops focused on equipping participants with positive attitude, relevant skills, and required knowledge needed to meet ADEC’s standards for an effective teacher. The workshops addressed the philosophy of teaching, including effective instructional planning practices, differentiation, pedagogy, and effective classroom management techniques, students’ engagement, ICT integration, collaboration with parents and so on. The workshops also focused on equipping potential new teachers with educational strategies, techniques and tools that they can utilize and adjust during their internship in one of ADEC’s schools. In addition, ASK’s Expert Trainers/Coaches implemented the workshops for the expert teachers during the “Coaching & Mentoring Capacity Building Program”. These workshops focused on developing the teachers’ mentoring and coaching skills, enabling them to offer potential new teachers the necessary support and guidance to effectively implement their roles and responsibilities as future ADEC teachers.

  1. Monitoring and Evaluation

ASK implemented pre- and post-assessment tools to identify participants’ competencies and satisfaction at the beginning of the workshops and at the end. This was done in order to effectively identify to which extent the program had achieved its intended objectives. Satisfaction surveys were also implemented throughout the program to ensure that it was continually adjusted to meet participants’ needs, addressing any potential challenges.
