ASK’s Singapore work visit – Day 3 Impressions
To build a strong and vibrant Singaporean Indian community together
Our third day started at our ‘basecamp’, the board room at the Singapore Indian Development Association (SINDA). Mr. Barathan, SINDA’s CEO introduced us to the work of the organisation, a self-help group that works since 1991 to uplift the Singapore Indian Community. SINDA’s key thrusts are in Education, Family Services and Active Collaboration. SINDA’s work – mainly in education – ranges from aiding Preschoolers (and their parents) to University students. The desired outcome of all these initiatives is to produce a graduate in every family in the years to come (‘graduate’ defined as one who completes University, Polytechnic or ITE education). The organisation is supported by the Indian community (± 353,000 citizens/permanent residents) and by a grant of the Singapore government. It’s a very inspiring model, with a big number of volunteers that support SINDA’s mission. Owned by the community and building bridges for the generations to come; “Moving forward together”.
Temasek Polytechnic: a forerunner in technical education in Singapore
Dr. Varaprasad surprised us today with a quick visit to Temasek Polytechnic. Situated next to the idyllic Bedok Reservoir, Temasek Polytechnic is a leading institution of higher learning in Singapore, established in 1990. So up for ‘her’ silver jubilee! Temasek has gained a reputation for being a vibrant polytechnic. We were treated with a special tour by the founder of this polytechnic and observed a well thought of learning environment, to support its students and faculty to excel.
A happy, child focused and community based school
It was a great pleasure meeting Rob Stokoe, Principal and Executive Director of Avondale Grammar School. Mr. Stoke started working recently at the school, but is already “purple coloured”, referring to the school’s logo. Avondale Grammar School is a co-educational, independent, international school. Avondale uses the world class Australian Curriculum, which acknowledges the importance of developing core foundational knowledge in each of the disciplines, as well as focusing explicitly on the development of key 21st Century skills. Avondale is committed to encouraging students to become successful learners, confident and creative individuals who are informed citizens, who demonstrate ethical integrity, relate well to others and communicate across cultures at local, regional and global levels. We believe that Avondale can play an important role by leading as good practice for our region, and ASK looks forward to exploring ways to collaborate in the near future with Avondale.
A Network for Knowledge Sharing
Dr. Timothy Chan, Director SIM Global Education and Mr. Vincent Yeo, Director SIM Professional Development welcomed us on their impressive campus. The Singapore Institute of Management is Singapore’s largest provider of private tertiary education and professional training, founded by the Singapore Economic Development Board in 1964. SIM offers diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes as well as executive education courses. In 2005, SIM University, Singapore’s first university to be privately funded, was established. The SIM Group provides its core services through three educational brands: SIM University, SIM Global Education and SIM Professional Development. PD programs of Singapore Consulting Group (SGC) are currently under SIM’s accreditation process. We explore the opportunity to offer programs in collaboration with SCG, certified by SIM Professional Development.
